Anhydrous Borax

Commonly found regular borax, also called sodium tetraborate decahydrate, has approximately half of its weight being water, which makes only 36% of its weight boric oxide (B2O3). Anhydrous Borax, on the other hand, is made from 100% sodium tetraborate with 68% of its weight being boric oxide (B2O3).

Therefore, the advantage of using Anhydrous Borax over Borax Decahydrate is using half the weight to get the same result.

As it is not necessary to “dry” Anhydrous Borax when casting, it does not “foam” and does not grow in size. As a result, it is possible to make better use of the volume of the crucible, as it will not be necessary to leave room for the borax to grow and then wither.

In cutlery, when borax is sprinkled on top of steel, the temperature drop will also be much less noticeable as it will not be necessary to evaporate the water from the borax, nor will there be a need to waste time with frequent reheating of the billet.
